The five organizational units that Materials Management runs on — how they connect, what each one means, and a worked example with real-looking codes and names.
Part 1
Company code is the top unit for MM. Purchasing runs down the left side, physical stock down the right; the purchasing organization is linked to the plants it buys for.
Dashed: not formally assigned — used inside the purchasing org
Part 2
The smallest unit in SAP for which a complete, self-contained set of accounts is drawn up. It represents one legal company: balance sheet, profit and loss and tax returns are made at this level. Every plant and purchasing value ends up in a company code's books.
Example: 1000 — ABC Industries Pvt. Ltd.
The unit that buys materials and services, negotiates prices and terms with vendors and is legally responsible for purchase orders. Vendor purchasing data, info records and conditions are kept at this level. It can be plant-specific, cross-plant, or cross-company (when not assigned to any company code).
Example: 1000 — ABC Central Purchasing
A buyer or group of buyers responsible for certain materials or purchasing activities. It is the internal contact for day-to-day purchasing and the vendor's point of contact. Used in reports, release strategies and for routing work to the right buyer.
Example: 101 — Raw Material Buyer
A location where materials are produced, stored or where services are provided — a factory, warehouse or branch. Stock is managed and valued per plant, MRP runs per plant and most material master data (purchasing, MRP, storage) is kept at plant level.
Example: 1100 — Jaipur Plant
A place inside a plant where stock is physically kept, such as a raw material store or a finished goods store. Stock quantities are tracked by storage location; value is tracked at plant level. The same storage location code can be reused in different plants.
Example: 0001 — Raw Material Store
Part 3
One company with two plants. A single central purchasing organization buys for both plants through three purchasing groups. Codes and names are sample values — replace them with the client's.
| Org unit | Code | Name | Assigned to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company Code | 1000 | ABC Industries Pvt. Ltd. | Client |
| Purchasing Organization | 1000 | ABC Central Purchasing | Company code 1000; plants 1100 and 1200 |
| Purchasing Group | 101 | Raw Material Buyer | — (client level) |
| Purchasing Group | 102 | Packaging Buyer | — (client level) |
| Purchasing Group | 103 | Spares & Consumables | — (client level) |
| Plant | 1100 | Jaipur Plant | Company code 1000 |
| Plant | 1200 | Pune Plant | Company code 1000 |
| Storage Location | 0001 | Raw Material Store | Plant 1100 and plant 1200 |
| Storage Location | 0002 | Finished Goods Store | Plant 1100 and plant 1200 |
| Storage Location | 0003 | Rejection Store | Plant 1100 |
| Storage Location | 0004 | Spares Store | Plant 1200 |
Storage location codes are unique only within a plant, so 0001 in Jaipur and 0001 in Pune are two different stores. Sample codes follow a common convention (plants numbered under their company code); any 4-character code works.
